Description
This is a railway accommodation bridge built in 1825 by George Stephenson for the Stockton & Darlington Railway, which has since been modified.
The bridge is made of ashlar sandstone and features 20th-century brick-built wing walls. Both the east and west elevations are nearly identical. It is a single-span bridge that is 10.5 feet wide (3.2 meters) and carries the railway over a farm track. Originally designed for a dual-tracked line, it now supports a single railway line, with a width of 21.5 feet (6.55 meters) between the low parapets. The bridge has a semi-circular arch made of voussoirs and includes a roll-moulded arch-ring stringcourse. The base of the low parapet features a horizontal, squared stringcourse, and the parapet ends with square terminals. On either side of the bridge, flanking the arch, are the 20th-century replacement brick-built wing walls that retain the sides of the embankment.
