Description
The gate piers and forecourt walls to Number 38 date from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with a section of the front wall added in the late 19th century. The piers are made of painted dressed sandstone, while the walls are constructed of brick in an irregular English garden wall bond, topped with painted stone copings. These walls enclose the forecourt at the front and on the right side.
The front wall consists of two sections, featuring pairs of gate piers at the center and both ends. There is a dwarf wall on the right and a 2.0-metre tall wall made of large late 19th-century bricks on the left. The piers are square in plan, with chamfered rustication and ogee-domed caps.
A wall that runs at right angles, enclosing the forecourt on the right, connects to the eaves of the school and includes two quadrant ramps that reduce its height to 2.0 metres near the right end pair of piers. This structure is included for its group value.
