Description
This large dovecote, located 45 metres east of the Manor House, dates from the 17th century or earlier. It is constructed of coursed rubble that has been painted white, topped with a stone-flagged roof. The dovecote has a circular plan and features a tapering, slightly-convex elevation divided into three stages by stone ledges. The lowest stage includes two squat, broached buttresses on the south side. There is a low doorway on the west with alternating jambs and a chamfered lintel. The top stage has double entrance holes with ledges on the east side. The low-pitched roof is adorned with six radiating tiled ridges. Inside, the dovecote is stone-lined and includes ledges and nesting boxes. It is noted as one of the largest and best-preserved examples in County Durham.
