Description

The Hurworth and Neasham War Memorial is located in the churchyard of the Church of All Saints, which is also listed. It is situated near the lychgate and overlooks Church View. The memorial features a Celtic cross made of rough-hewn grey granite that rises from a tapering plinth, which is set on a low step. At the back of the plinth, there is a granite panel that displays the dedication for the Second World War, stating "1939 – 1945/ WE WILL REMEMBER THEM/ (NAMES)." The entire memorial is enclosed within a small square area defined by a low kerb.

The front face of the cross head is decorated with a slightly raised and polished cross. Below this, the cross shaft has a raised and polished panel that contains the main dedicatory inscription, which reads: "IN PROUD/ AND LOVING/ MEMORY OF/ THOSE WHO/ DIED FOR/ KING AND/ COUNTRY/ 1914-1918/ LEST WE FORGET/ ERECTED/ BY THE/ WOMEN AND/ CHILDREN/ OF/ HURWORTH/ AND/ NEASHAM." The names of those commemorated from the First World War are inscribed on three sides of the plinth.
