Description
The Emerson table tomb, located 3 metres west of the Church of All Saints, is a table tomb from the mid-19th century that serves as a replacement for a headstone dedicated to William Emerson, who died in 1782. It is made of sandstone and designed in an elaborate Gothic-Revival style. The tomb features a wide double-chamfered plinth and octagonal corner piers. The hipped top slab is adorned with ridge ribs that have fleur-de-lys terminals. The rectangular block set on the plinth has end piers with tracery motifs and bears worn inscriptions in Greek and Latin that read " ... COPIED FROM THE ORIGINAL HEADSTONE ... ", commemorating the life and achievements of William Emerson. This tomb is included for its group value. William Emerson, born in 1701 in Hurworth, was a notable mathematician, astronomer, and sun-dial maker.
