Description
The lych gate and churchyard wall of the Church of St. Andrew are significant structures located in Sadberge. The churchyard wall, likely built in the 18th century, may include some medieval masonry. It is constructed of squared sandstone, with the western wall primarily made of squared limestone, and features large squared sandstone coping stones. The wall encloses a rectangular churchyard on all four sides, standing between 1.0 to 1.5 metres tall on the north side, where the lych gate is centrally located. There are two stone steps on both sides of the wall to the east of the lych gate. The lower, partly rebuilt eastern section has a ramp at the north-east corner and gradually rises in height towards a rounded south-east corner. The southern section reaches a height of 1.5 to 1.75 metres and has a long, rounded south-west corner, while the western section is of similar height with a rounded north-west corner.
The lych gate, dated 1898 on the rear tie beam, features an oak frame and a Welsh slate roof with a gable front. It has arch-braced corner posts and a front tie beam inscribed with the raised letters "MORS AD VITAM VIA," topped by a cross. The roof has overhanging eaves and verges adorned with wavy bargeboards.
These structures are included for their group value, as the churchyard is situated on the site of the historically significant medieval manor of Sadberge, which was once moated.
