Description
The Mayer tomb, located approximately 22 metres south-west of the Church of All Saints in Muggleswick, is a Grade II listed headstone and railings. Made of stone and signed by I. Lough, it commemorates the children of the Mayer family who passed away between 1803 and 1829, including John Mayer who died in 1819. The reverse side features inscriptions for Thomas and Ann Mayer, who died in 1852 and 1860, respectively. The railings were added in 1919 by Wm. Mayer from Evenbank Foundry in Dumbarton. The tomb consists of a tall sandstone slab with a shaped moulded top, which includes a low relief cherub's head and decorative swags. The north edge of the slab bears Lough's signature near the top. Notably, this tomb is said to be the first sculpture created independently by John Lough, who was apprenticed to Jonathan Marshall of Shotley Bridge from 1812 to 1819. Ann Mayer is recognized as the Nanny Mayer, after whom the Stanhope and Tyne railway incline is named. The low railings, designed with linked squares, feature a wide top rail that bears the relief inscription: "In the unerring course of time this is to trace a grave and protect the honoured tomb of Ann Mayer by Wm. Mayer Evenbank Foundry Dumbarton NB." At the foot of the grave, there is an inscription that reads: "Time 1919 flies," accompanied by an hour-glass finial.
