Description

This group of tombs, located south of the Church of All Saints, consists of three chest tombs, one table tomb, and four headstones, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. They are made of sandstone ashlar.

The first chest tomb commemorates John Ward, who died in 1686, along with family members who passed away up to 1717. It features plain sides, a moulded top, and a well-cut inscription. The second tomb is a table tomb for John Carr, who died in 1756, supported by six tapered square pedestals and topped with a moulded surface, inscribed in Latin with an English verse. The third chest tomb is for William Carr, who died in 1748, along with family members who died in 1715 and 1736. It has panelled sides, a moulded top, and inscriptions in both English and Latin, including the term 'denatus' for the 1715 death.

The fourth chest tomb is dedicated to John and Alice Byerley, who died in 1670, and Anne Carr, who died between 1749 and 1750. This tomb also features panelled sides and a moulded top.

Among the headstones, Margaret Wren's, who died in 1719, has a shaped top with a skull and crossed bones decoration. Isabella Carr's headstone, from 1742, includes a Latin inscription and similar skull and crossed bones decoration. There are two headstones for Hannah Carr, one from 1738 with an elaborately-shaped top and another from 1789, also with an elaborately-shaped top and a decoration of an open book.

These tombs are referenced in J.W. Fawcett's "The Parish Registers of Muggleswick, Durham" published in 1906.
