Description

The Kyle tomb, located approximately 15 metres west of the Cemetery Chapel on Victoria Road in Barnard Castle, is a monument dedicated to members of the Kyle family, including Jane and Joseph Kyle. It was created around 1890 and is signed on the plinth by Algernon Percy Prudhoe Kyle and Alexander Dobson Kyle. The tomb is constructed from sandstone and marble and stands about 2 metres high with a square plan, resting on a plinth and chamfered base.

The design features angle pilasters that support arches adorned with leaf-carved spandrels and scroll brackets beneath a prominent cornice. A high acanthus leaf on studded stepped coping holds an orb and cross finial. Inscribed marble panels set within the arches commemorate family members: on the east side, Jane, wife of Joseph, who died in 1890 at the age of 60; Joseph, who died in 1897 at 71; and their son Gibson, who passed away in 1930 at 76. The north side honors a daughter, RW, and two sons, whose initials are also signatures, who died in 1949, 1951, and 1953 at ages 86, 84, and 95. The marble on the north side has eroded over time.

Historically, Joseph Kyle was a builder who contributed to many buildings in Barnard Castle, while his son Gibson moved to Newcastle upon Tyne and became a successful builder and architect.
