Description

The Gainforth tomb, located approximately 9 metres south of the Church of St Michael, dates from around 1704 and commemorates William Gainforth. This headstone is made of red sandstone ashlar and stands about 0.6 metres high and 0.3 metres wide. The front features an inscription in a lower square, with a skull positioned between scrolls at the top, accompanied by large feathered wings. The rear displays a skull and crossed bones in low relief above a continued inscription.
