Description
This is a group of two tombs located approximately 5 metres south of the vestry of the Church of St. Ebba in Ebchester. The tombs consist of one chest and one cross, dedicated to members of the Surtees family from Hamsterley. The structures are made of marble and sandstone ashlar and date from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The first tomb features a tall marble cross on a stepped base, commemorating R.S. Surtees, who died in 1864, along with members of his family up to 1871. The cross is adorned with high relief lilies that twine around the shaft. R.S. Surtees was known for his novels about English country life and hunting, particularly the "Jorrocks" books.
The second tomb is a chest with tooled sandstone sides and a moulded top. It bears an inscription for Robert Surtees of Milkwell Burn, who died in 1700, along with members of his family up to 1777. The letters on this chest are well cut.
