Description
The Castleside War Memorial is located in the graveyard to the north of the Vicarage. It features a tall pink granite obelisk, which is square in shape and rises from the sloping cornice of the plinth. This plinth is set on a three-stage base. Surrounding the monument is a circular kerb adorned with low pyramidal pillars. Four narrow paths with scalloped edges lead from the kerb to the memorial.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth states: "ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS AND FRIENDS OF CASTLESIDE IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918" followed by ten names. Below this, on the upper stage of the base, is the inscription: "THEY ANSWERED THE CALL OF DUTY THEY SLEEP AMONG THE BRAVE THEY SACRIFICED THEIR PRECIOUS LIVES OUR BRITISH HOMES TO SAVE." The middle stage features a scriptural quotation from John 15:13: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS."
The names of the remaining First World War soldiers are listed on the right-hand face of the plinth. On the left side, the dedication for the Second World War reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945," followed by eleven names, with the remaining names listed on the rear of the memorial.
