Description

Holmside Hall Farm Calf Shed and Wall Attached is part of Holmside Hall, dating from the late medieval period with some alterations. The structure is made of thinly rendered sandstone rubble, featuring quoins and ashlar dressings, and has a roof of corrugated asbestos. It is arranged in an L-plan, likely representing the north range of a former courtyard, with a gateway on the west side. The building is one storey high and consists of three bays.

There is bank entry to bays four, five, six, and seven, with boarded doors at the outer ends of the bank. The left door is set in a chamfered round-headed stone surround, while the right door is in an ogee-chamfered Tudor-arched surround. Four small square openings with chamfered stone jambs are located under stone lintels, along with two inserted fixed lights that have opening transoms in the eleventh and thirteenth bays.

At the north-west corner, a higher wall marks the north end of the west entrance building, where two storeys of the wall survive, extending south to the farm entrance track. There is a boarded door in plain wood jambs, and to the left, a label mould is found over a blocked 3-cusped-ogee-light window, which features an inserted primitive female figure holding Pan-pipes. A memento mori is reused in one quoin, and there is a corbelled parapet beside the entrance, with the springing of an arch on a chamfered jamb at the south end.
