Description
A cart shed and barn, likely dating from the late 18th century, incorporates older medieval fabric. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and quoins, although some brick patching is visible. It has a corrugated asbestos roof. The barn is two storeys and four bays wide. The north elevation features four segmental arches with voussoirs and projecting keys, designed for carts. Four blocked openings above these arches have flat stone lintels with low-relief wedges, and projecting stone sills. The left return gable has a round-headed metal-framed window set within a partly-blocked two-centred opening, without any surrounding detail. The right return gable has stone steps that lead to a loft door under a flat stone lintel, and a chamfered door jamb situated next to the rear corner of a single-storey, one-bay pent extension. The building’s group value lies in its contribution to the wider landscape and historical context of the area.
