Description
There are two tombs located about 5 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St. Ebba, dating from the 18th century. The first is a headstone made of sandstone ashlar, approximately one metre high, dedicated to Jonathan Ewer Brownlees, who died in 1782. It features an enriched moulding around the edge that rises into top scrolls flanking a palmette, with a central recessed oval panel framed in bud and bead moulding, displaying an inscription in high-quality lettering of varied types. The second tomb is a table tomb supported by five shaped square pedestals, with the central pedestal misplaced to one end. It has a moulded-edged top and bears an inscription commemorating members of the Surtees family of Coltpark and Bigges, who died between 1757 and 1817.
