Description
The Rectory is a house dating to 1819, designed by I. Bonomi for the manager of the London Lead Company. The property is constructed of painted rubble with an ashlar plinth, quoins, and dressings; it has a graduated Lakeland slate roof with roll-moulded ridge tiles and rendered chimneys topped with octagonal yellow pots.
The house is two storeys high and has three bays. A central semicircular Tuscan porch is built of ashlar, with the date "1819" inscribed on the architrave. Three steps lead up to inserted half-glazed double doors, above which is a patterned overlight; original double doors with six panels, partly glazed, are located behind. Flanking the porch are tripartite sash windows with moulded sills and panelled lintels set under recessed lunettes. The three first-floor sash windows are plain and have projecting stone sills. A low-pitched hipped roof has two ridge chimneys.
A Gothic-style cast-iron bracket supports a large hexagonal gas lamp with painted glass and a high-domed top on the rear elevation. Some rear sash windows contain glazing bars. A small outbuilding attached to the left of the main house provides access to the Parish Hall and flats situated above, which were formerly part of the Rectory.
Inside, the doors are six-panelled with architraves and pilasters. The interior features acanthus-leaf stucco ceiling roses and moulded cornices. A dog-leg open-string staircase has a plain handrail on stick balusters, a wreath, and a curtail. A ground-floor room at the rear left has an elliptical stone fire-arch on an impost string.
