Description

House. Built in the late 17th century, with later 18th and 19th-century additions. The original section is of sandstone rubble with roughly-dressed quoins on the right side; the additions are of dressed sandstone with quoins. The roof is pantiled, with a double row of sandstone flags at the eaves, and has brick and stone stacks. The front of the house is two storeys and five bays, reflecting two phases of building: a three-bay section from the late 17th century on the right, and a two-bay section from the late 18th century on the left. A square-headed doorway, possibly repositioned, is in the second bay from the left. It has a 20th-century door, a restored hoodmould, chamfered jambs and lintel inscribed with a partially obscured date "16??". To the right of the door are two two-light windows and one three-light window, all with renewed flat mullions, extended sills, and lintels. A blocked doorway to the left of the door has a lintel dated 1771; a 19th-century three-light window with leaded casements is to the left of that. The first floor has two 19th-century three-light windows to the left and two two-light windows with flat mullions, plus one similar three-light window to the right. The roof has flat-coped gables and shaped kneelers; the right gable has a 19th-century corniced stone stack, while the left gable and ridge stacks are rebuilt in brick. The right return features two blocked windows in the gable. A 17th-century doorway to the rear, partly obscured by a 19th-century addition, has chamfered jambs. A single-storey addition to the right has been rebuilt and is not considered to be of particular interest.
