Description

The Roman Catholic Church of St Mary, built in 1849, is located in Wycliffe with Thorpe. This church is constructed from rubble with tooled-and-margined stone buttresses, ashlar dressings, and a parapet, topped with a graduated Lakeland slate roof. It features an aisleless three-bay body with a west porch designed in the 14th-century style. The church has stepped buttresses at the corners and between the bays, with a string course that runs above the windows, serving as a hoodmould.

The flat-roofed west porch includes a double flight of steps leading up to a central arch that forms a three-bay double-chamfered arcade, while the side arches are boarded. There is a string course below the embattled parapet, which has pierced merlons. Above the porch, a three-light window is set below a spherical triangle window, alongside a pointed niche in the gable. Inside the porch, the west door features studded double doors with scrolled hinges set in a moulded arch, which is adorned with sacred monograms as hoodmould stops. The side walls of the church display two-light windows with Y tracery and a similar parapet, with coped end gables. The east end of the church shows a blocked five-light window and a quatrefoil in the gable.

Inside, the church is plastered and features a freestone and marble altar, along with a panelled reredos that includes kneeling angels under crocketed arches. The font has an octagonal bowl decorated with raised shields, one bearing the letters "IHS" within fleur-de-lys borders, likely dating from the 15th century, with a later shaft and base.

The church is prominently situated on a hilltop.
