Description
The walls and piers in front of numbers 53-59 (odd) and 59A in Barnard Castle date from the late 18th century to early 19th century. They are constructed of rubble with ashlar coping and piers. These low walls with gabled coping serve as garden retaining walls for what was originally a single house known as Caroline Grove, which has since been divided into four separate houses. Each house is accessed through square, slightly tapered piers made from a single block with pyramidal coping. Number 57 features a wrought-iron gate and an overthrow dating from around 1950, made by the Grove Iron Works in Barnard Castle, which bears the initials 'WS' for William Smith, the owner of the iron works who lived in this house. The walls and piers are included for their group value.
