Description
The headstone for Thomas Corbett is located approximately 100 meters east of the Church of St Helen in Bishop Auckland. It was created around 1867 and is signed by J Watson. This Gothic-style headstone is made of sandstone and stands 1 meter high. It features Gothic-arched heads on the main slab and narrow side panels, which have tooled decoration. The inscription is presented in various letter styles, including Gothic, sans serif, sans serif italic, and both upper and lower case cursive script. It commemorates Corbett, who was "instantaneously killed at the above named colliery, by being thrown into the fly wheel hole, with the rope getting out of its course, which he was assisting to put on to the drum of the engine while in motion." He was just 17 years old. The headstone was erected by the bankmen of the colliery as a mark of respect.
