Description

The orangery, located approximately 200 metres north-west of the bridge over Forthburn Beck, was built in 1879 by J. Watson. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar with a rear of coursed squared sandstone and was roofless at the time of the survey. The structure is a single storey with seven bays, featuring a Tuscan arcade. The central arch is higher and has missing doors, while there is a balustraded parapet on a deep cornice, adorned with garlanded urns above each column. The returns have a similar two-bay arcade, with the rear arches being blind. There is a skeletal iron structure intended for a hipped roof, which has spear finials, but the covering was missing. The rear of the building shows fragments of a pent glass-house. Inside, there are seven full-height groups of iron rods designed to support plants. The orangery was empty and derelict at the time of the survey.
