Description
The township road marker stone on Forthburn Bridge is likely from the mid-18th century and is made of sandstone ashlar. It has an arch-topped shape, standing about 0.5 meters high and is rectangular in plan. The stone is inscribed with 'Streatlam with Stainton Township' on the north side and 'Barnard Castle Township' on the south side, featuring a long 's' in lower case. There is also an Ordnance Survey bench mark on the narrow west side facing the road. This marker indicates the boundary between Marwood civil parish and the parishes of Streatlam and Stainton.
