Description
This railway bridge, built around 1830 for the Clarence Railway Company, is located 25 metres northeast of Ricknall Mill Farmhouse. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, the bridge features twin tunnels and carries a large embankment of the disused Simpasture to Port Clarence Railway over the River Skerne. Both the north and south faces of the bridge are similar and front a roughly 60-metre long river tunnel and a separate storm drain. The south face displays chamfered rustication and is divided into two sections by three battered pilasters. The circular river entrance has skew voussoirs, with a smaller elliptical-arched storm drain to the left. Short, set-back embankment walls flank the main section of the bridge. The low parapet, defined by a large roll moulding and segmental coping, projects forward over the pilasters. The north front is similar but lacks the flanking embankment walls. This bridge spans the parishes of Great Aycliffe and Mordon.
