Description

The Garden House, outbuildings, and walls located to the southwest of Rokeby Park date from the early 18th century, with the garden walls heightened in the late 18th or 19th century. The Garden House is likely from the early 19th century. The south wall is constructed of brick in an irregular bond, while the other walls are made of brick with rubble outer faces and cut stone dressings. The Garden House features a front made of squared tooled stone, with other elevations in rubble, and has a Welsh slate roof. The outbuildings are built from rubble and topped with stone slate roofs.

The garden measures approximately 110 by 65 metres, with the Garden House forming the eastern part of the northern side and the rear wall of the Stable Block making up most of the eastern side. The tall walls have flat stone coping. A central north gateway features squared stone piers with block caps and ball finials. There are two doorways at the southeast corner, with the southern one being segmental-arched, and an enlarged gateway at the west of the south wall. Heating ducts are present in the south wall.

The Garden House is two storeys high with three plus one bays, and has raised quoins. There is a renewed door in the second bay and 16-pane sash windows with slightly projecting sills, except for a small inserted first-floor window between the right bays. The hipped roof has two banded ridge stacks. The rear features a central six-panel door with a two-pane overlight and a 16-pane sash window above. The pent-roofed outbuildings to the right include a cottage with two 9-pane sashes under timber lintels, and a five-bay cartshed with timber lintels on stone piers.

The outbuildings are included for their group value. The attached outbuildings at the rear of the west garden wall are not of special interest.
