Description

The war memorial located in front of number 45 Market Place in Bishop Auckland commemorates those who died in the Great War, the Second World War, and the Falklands Conflict. It was constructed around 1920 using sandstone ashlar and polished granite. The memorial features three square sandstone steps leading up to a granite column with a square base on a chamfered plinth. This plinth is raised to support scroll consoles at the corners of a large inscribed block. The design includes corniced coping, a pedimented center, and round pinnacles at the corners, topped by a high round granite colonnette with a fluted dome and a ringed cross finial. The memorial was moved around 1980 from its original location at Station Approach, Newgate Street.
