Description

The Blackhall War Memorial is a stone structure located in Welfare Park, situated between the cricket ground and the bowling greens. It features a tall Latin cross, which is octagonal in shape with moulded terminals, rising from a pyramidal plinth. This plinth is set on a base made of stone blocks, which is elevated on a round dais. The dais can be accessed from the south-east via a flight of five steps, bordered by a low capped wall with scroll ends. At the back of the monument, there is a low curving wall that ends in stone piers.

The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth reads: "+ TO THE MEMORY OF THE GLORIOUS DEAD OF BLACKHALL WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WARS, 1914-1918 – 1939-1945, CIVILIAN AIR RAID VICTIMS 1939-1945 AND THE KOREAN WAR." The left side of the plinth lists the years 1914 and 1918 along with 14 names, and notes "CIVILIAN AIR RAID VICTIMS 1939-1945" with 8 names, and "KOREAN WAR" with 1 name. The right side lists the years 1939 and 1945 along with 54 names.

Additionally, a rectangular stone plaque on the front face of the stone block base states: "AND IN REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE WHO HAVE GIVEN THEIR LIVES IN THE MANY CONFLICTS SINCE LEST WE FORGET." On the left-hand wall pier, the inscription reads "DUNELM GRANITE CO," while the right-hand pier is marked with the year "1952."
