Description

BISHOP AUCKLAND

NZ23SW A 688 634-1/2/6 (North side (off)) 06/05/86 Park gates and screen walls to Park Head Farm (Formerly Listed as: DURHAM ROAD Auckland Castle Park: Park gates and screen walls, Park Head Farm)

GV II

Screen and gateway at former entrance to Auckland Castle Park, with gates, piers and flanking walls. Late C18. Piers and principal walls ashlar, partly rusticated; flanking walls coursed squared stone with ashlar coping; wrought-iron gates. Two tall pedimented gate piers have plinths, bands, round-headed niche with keystone, and vermiculated rustication to panels. Flanking short sections of high wall with plinth contain oeuil-de-boeuf panels with rusticated keystones and end in lower piers with plinths and low pyramidal coping. Similar piers terminate lower serpentine walls of coursed squared stone with ramped ashlar coping. Wrought-iron gates of early C19 type have paired middle rails crossed by quadrant bracing to spike-headed uprights and dogbars. From these piers, lower walls continue to the join the outbuildings of Park Head Farm at left (qv) and to return as field boundary wall at right. Said to have possible association with a design by James Wyatt, gates similar to those in Wyatt's inner screen to Auckland Castle (qv).
