Description
Park gates and screen walls at the former entrance to Auckland Castle Park date from the late 18th century. The structure includes gates, piers, and flanking walls. The piers and main walls are made of ashlar stone, partly rusticated, while the flanking walls are constructed from coursed squared stone with ashlar coping. The wrought-iron gates are notable for their design.
The two tall pedimented gate piers feature plinths, decorative bands, a round-headed niche with a keystone, and panels with vermiculated rustication. The shorter sections of the high wall on either side have plinths and contain oeuil-de-boeuf panels with rusticated keystones, ending in lower piers with plinths and low pyramidal coping. The lower serpentine walls, made of coursed squared stone, have ramped ashlar coping.
The wrought-iron gates, which are of an early 19th-century style, have paired middle rails that are crossed by quadrant bracing to spike-headed uprights and dogbars. From these piers, the lower walls extend to connect with the outbuildings of Park Head Farm on the left and return as a field boundary wall on the right. There is a suggestion that this design may be associated with James Wyatt, as the gates are similar to those found in Wyatt's inner screen to Auckland Castle.
