Description

Park Head Farmhouse is an early 18th-century farmhouse with later 18th-century alterations, located just off the A688 road. It has been converted into a private house and retains adjoining outbuildings. The farmhouse is constructed of rubble with quoins and painted ashlar dressings, and has a concrete tiled roof with stone gable copings and brick chimneys. The layout is an L-shape, enclosing two sides of a farmyard.

The north-facing garden front has a two-storey, four-bay main section, and a lower, one-storey outbuilding to the left. A wide blank bay exists on the ground floor of the main range. The three remaining bays feature a canted bay window with early 19th-century glazing bars and a sliding sash, a renewed fixed light, and a two-light casement, all under flat stone lintels. The first floor has a 16-pane sash window above the bay window, with a lintel at eaves, and a smaller 20th-century sash at the left, also with a flat stone lintel. A one-bay wing to the right has a gable, while the second west range has a hipped roof. The return facing the park has three-light windows with central opening lights; flat stone lintels to the ground floor and timber lintels to the first.

The rear elevation, facing the yard, features a 20th-century porch. The outbuilding attached to the west range has alternate block jambs to the central boarded door, along with flat stone lintels and sills to flanking ventilator openings. The shelter shed at the east end of the north range has four segmental stone arches, and a blocked low arch in the right return, possibly originally used for removing manure.

Inside the house, a bolection-moulded stone fire surround is featured in the front left ground-floor room. There are 18th-century six-panelled doors and some 19th-century chimney pieces, along with a straight, enclosed staircase in the second west range.
