Description
This is a complex of garden and drive walls and railings located south of Auckland Castle Drive, within Auckland Castle Park. The walls and railings date to the 18th and 19th centuries.
The walls are constructed of roughly squared stone with ashlar dressings and a brick inner leaf. A large garden situated south of Castle Lodge extends downhill towards the River Gaunless and is enclosed by these walls, which have a rubble outer leaf, a brick inner leaf, and ashlar coping. The walls originally incorporated a heating system, with flues and arches that are now blocked. A further terrace wall divides the garden into two sections. The north wall partly serves as a retaining wall and features battlemented parapets on the side facing the drive to Auckland Castle and the park.
From the north-east corner of the garden, railings extend eastwards and connect to the east wall of the castle garden. There is a vehicle gate and a kissing gate within this section. The railings are composed of plain wrought-iron rails fixed between flat wrought-iron posts. The gates feature diagonal bracing and an S-shaped handle. The gate posts are tapered octagonal cast-iron with moulded tops, bearing a founder’s mark from A&I Mawe & Co., of Glasgow, London & Dublin, although this mark is partially obscured.
