Description
The guidepost at the junction of the A689 and Causeway Road in Stanhope Ireshopburn dates from the early 20th century. It features a tapered cast-iron post with cast-iron indicators. The post has a moulded plinth, a moulding that supports the indicators, and a top moulding with a spear finial. The indicators are shaped like simplified pointing hands and include low-relief lettering. One indicates St. John's Chapel at 1 1/4 miles and Stanhope at 8 3/4 miles, while the other points to Alston at 11 3/4 miles and Allendale at 12 1/2 miles.
