Description
This mid-20th century monument commemorates John Wesley, incorporating elements of a former 18th-century sundial. The monument is approximately 1.8 meters high, built from limestone and featuring a metal plaque. It consists of an 18th-century pillar set upon a two-step base, which in turn is topped by a square abacus. A carved triangular stone displays a commemorative metal plaque that reads: “THE REV. JOHN WESLEY / (1703-1791) RENOWNED EVANGELIST AND / FOUNDER OF METHODISM / PREACHED IN THIS VICINITY / ON SOME OF HIS FREQUENT VISITS TO WEARDALE.” The monument’s group value lies in its commemoration of a significant religious figure and its incorporation of an earlier architectural feature.
