Description
Durham Prison C Wing is a prison accommodation block dated 1850, likely designed by Bonomi and Cory. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof with stone gable copings and a stock brick ventilation stack. The south elevation consists of four storeys and eleven bays. The small barred windows have chamfered stone surrounds, with most having cambered heads, while some are square-headed and paired in the left bay on the three lower floors. The left return gable includes three tripartite stair windows in raised stone surrounds, with a tall central window that has a segmental-headed date panel in the lintel and a keyed Venetian top window. The block kneelers are supported on moulded brackets.
