Description
The walls attached to numbers 12 to 15 are part of the castle walls, dating from the 12th century and possibly incorporating earlier materials. These high walls feature flat wide buttresses and a round-arched opening leading to the Lying House. They also include slit openings from a 'soldiers' walk', which is an intra-mural passage that provided separate access along the wall without entering the Priory garden. Additionally, these walls contain the only visible remains of the Priory infirmary, which has been demolished above ground level, except for a section that is now part of the stables north of the Lying House. A similarly buttressed stretch of wall extends northwards from the west range of the castle.
