Description
The Shalter tomb, located approximately 20 metres south-west of the Church of St John the Evangelist, dates from around 1706 and commemorates Eleanor and Jane Shalter. It is made of sandstone ashlar and stands about 0.5 metres high, featuring a shaped top. Each side of the tomb has a patterned edge with paired leaves positioned below two top paterae. A beaded pendant from the centre of the leaves divides the surface into two sections, which are inscribed with the names "ELEANOR, JANE" and the dates "THE 15" and "THE 28" (with the year 1706 being eroded). The reverse side has a similar border and paired leaves above a skull, heart, and crossed bones, with the heart at the centre and flanked by hourglasses, along with paterae above and below the hourglasses.
