Description
The Kirk Merrington War Memorial is a tall granite structure located in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Evangelist, which is also a Grade II*-listed building. The memorial features a small Latin cross that rises from a tall, square obelisk. The obelisk is positioned on the pedimented top of a pedestal, which has a moulded base that rests on a two-step base. The entire memorial is surrounded by railings set on a stone kerb.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the pedestal reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN UNDYING MEMORY OF/ THE MEN/ OF MERRINGTON/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918./ AND THE WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945." Below this, on the pedestal’s base, is the inscription "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE."
The names of those who died in the First World War are listed on one face of the pedestal, with the phrase "REQUIESCAT IN PACE" inscribed below on the base. On the opposite face, the dates "1939 – 1945" are inscribed on the pedestal’s pediment, followed by the names of seven individuals who died in the Second World War. Below these names, the pedestal’s base bears the inscription "THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE."
