Description
The war memorial, located approximately 20 metres west of the Town Hall in Ferryhill, was erected around 1919. It is made of granite and features a marble statue. The memorial has a square step leading to a rock-faced base of a tapered pedestal, which includes a plinth and cornice. Atop the pedestal is a statue of a Durham Light Infantry soldier depicted in a casual pose, with his hands clasped around the barrel of a rifle resting on the ground.
The inscription on the plinth begins with "To the Glory of God..." and honors the men of Ferryhill who died in the Great War from 1914 to 1918, with their names inscribed on all sides. An additional inscription commemorates those who served in the Second World War from 1939 to 1945, with further names included. The front plinth bears the phrase, "Pass not this stone in sorrow but in pride/And may ye live as nobly as they died."
