Description
The Somerville tomb, located about 5 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St. John, dates from around 1803. It commemorates Robert Somerville, a Presbyterian minister from Ireshopeburn, and his wife, Margaret. The tomb features a tall, fine-grained red sandstone slab with a raised moulded edge and a semi-circular top that is flanked by pyramid finials. The inscription consists of finely-cut letters in various styles, arranged in both straight and curved lines. The top panel displays a draped urn with a sloping cross on the left and an anchor with rope on the right, all depicted in low relief. The tomb is signed by the sculptor Jes. Teasdale from Slaggyford.
