Description
The garden and stable-yard steps, walls, and piers located east of Broomshields Hall date from the early 18th century, with some alterations and additions made in the 19th century. Constructed from brick and sandstone rubble, these features include ashlar dressings and copings, as well as ashlar piers. The high garden wall projects forward from the first bay of the service extension on the side of Broomshields Hall and runs parallel to the house, descending in a series of steps to the left, where it meets a dwarf wall that encloses a sunken garden in front of the house. The wall has stone outer leaves and brick inner leaves, and it was originally heated. It features flat stone copings and squat corniced piers at the corners, which also terminate the steps leading down to the garden on the left side. There is a round-headed arch with chamfered voussoirs adjacent to the house in the high wall, which is accessed by steps from the stable yard. The stable yard is enclosed by short rubble walls with flat stone copings that connect the garden wall to the stable-coach-house wing. At the entrance to the yard, there are two square piers that are chamfered, topped with cornices and low pyramidal coping.
