Description
The Attwood Tomb is located approximately 100 meters west and 6 meters north of the gate to the Church of St Mary and St Stephen in Wolsingham. It features a coped slab made of grey granite, which commemorates Charles Attwood, who lived from 1791 to 1875 and resided at Hollywood House and Tow Law. The tomb has an incised cross with foliated arms on the ridge of the coping, and there is an inscription around the base of the coping. Charles Attwood is noted for founding the iron works that significantly contributed to the prosperity of Wolsingham, and he developed a new method of steel-making similar to that of Bessemer. The tomb is included for its historical interest.
