Description

A terrace of seven cottages built around 1830 in Whorlton. The cottages are constructed of dressed and tooled sandstone with a continuous roof of sandstone flags and ashlar stacks. Each cottage is single-storied and three bays wide, with a central door. Windows and doors have raised surrounds. The central cottage, number 4, is slightly projecting and forms the focal point of the symmetrical terrace. Number 4 features dressed quoins, a simple Tuscan doorcase with a small pediment, two two-pane bow windows, and flat-coped gables. Cottages 1 and 7 also have dressed quoins and flat-coped gables. Most cottages have boarded doors, with number 7 having a glazed door added in the late 20th century. Windows include 20th-century casements in cottages 1, 2, 3 and 5, two-pane sashes in cottage 6, and two four-pane sashes in cottage 7. Corniced gable stacks are present, along with five similar ridge stacks, and one rebuilt brick stack between cottages 1 and 2. Detached outbuildings at the rear are not of particular architectural interest.
