Description
Flushiemere House and the level entrance located about 5 meters to the north is a lead and barytes mine lodging shop, likely built in the mid-19th century for the London Lead Company. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with quoins and ashlar dressings, topped with a graduated stone-flagged roof featuring stone chimneys and square yellow pots. It has two storeys and three bays, with a one-storey, one-bay pent addition on the left side.
The central boarded door is topped by a flat stone lintel, and similar lintels and projecting stone sills are found on the flanking and first-floor square openings, some of which have four empty lights; the one above the door is blocked. The roof features three ridge chimneys with top strings, positioned at the ends and to the right of the second bay. Inside, the building is plastered and includes a central enclosed stair and a cast iron kitchen range in the left ground-floor room, made by Henry Down from Barnard Castle. There is a chamfered stone lintel over the fireplace in the right room, and partition walls in the right bay create two small ground-floor rooms, one of which has a stone shelf.
The level entrance for mine drainage, also likely from the mid-19th century, is formed by sandstone blocks creating a round-headed rough arch with voussoirs. This building is included for its group value, as the London Lead Company was known for providing lodging shops for its miners after 1818.
