Description
Wynch Bridge is a suspension bridge built around 1820 for the Duke of Cleveland, replacing an earlier bridge on the site that was erected before 1757 and was said to be the earliest in Europe. The bridge features cast iron columns, wrought iron hangers, suspension cables, and handrails, along with a wooden deck. At each end, there are two tapered Tuscan columns that support iron blocks through which the suspension rails are threaded. Iron guy cables and square-section guy rods are bolted to the outside of these blocks. Of the three original handrails threaded through the 13 pairs of hangers, the top one was missing, as were the planks of the deck, at the time of the survey. The deck is supported by 13 beams and was being reinforced during the survey.
The original bridge was constructed to allow lead miners living in Holwick to access the mines at Middleton.
