Description
Bishop Rock Lighthouse is a tower lighthouse built between 1852 and 1858 by James Walker. It was encased and heightened in 1883 by James Douglass, who was the supervising engineer. The lighthouse is constructed from granite ashlar and features a metal cupola.
The exterior consists of a circular plan with a tapering six-stage tower. It has a boarded door and small windows, along with a bracketed gallery beneath a lattice light topped with a conical roof.
Historically, this lighthouse replaced a cast-iron tower built in 1849, which was destroyed in 1850. It is recognized as the tallest and best-known tower lighthouse in the British Isles.
