Description

St. Olave's Bridge is a road bridge over the River Waveney, built in 1847 by George Edwards. It is located at the site of a medieval ferry, with proposals for a bridge dating back to 1297 and 1422. A stone bridge was constructed around 1509, followed by various repairs until the current structure was rebuilt in 1847. The bridge underwent decking replacement in 1920 and a pedestrian walkway was added to the south side in 1960. It is made of gault brick and cast iron, with some steel components. The bridge features gault brick piers on the east and west banks of the river, rounded to form cutwaters. It is designed with bowstring girder construction, using cast iron segments that support the deck through vertical hangers, which and the deck have now been replaced with steel. The deck is supported by steel transverse girders, and cast iron lattice parapets flank the decking, which is held up by scrolled brackets.
