Description

Gainsborough Bridge is a road bridge built between 1787 and 1791 by William Weston, with alterations made in 1964. The bridge is constructed of coursed ashlar and concrete, measuring approximately 328 feet in length. It features three unequal segmental arches with moulded soffits, with the central arch spanning 70 feet and the outer arches each spanning 62 feet. The bridge has semicircular cutwaters, with the lower courses being vermiculated and the upper courses and imposts striated with double fillets and capped with domes. The central spandrels include round-headed niches flanked by pilasters, while the outer spandrels also have round-headed niches flanked by pilasters. A moulded cornice runs along the top, above which there are seven projecting concrete deck beams, a steel balustrade, and concrete piers. A modern iron handrail has been added.
