Description
The Red Lion Public House is a two-storey building, likely dating from around 1800. It is rendered, probably over local rubble stone, and features mock timber framing on the upper floor, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The building has a single depth range facing the street and may have originally included a cross-passage entry leading to three rooms, with a rear wing on the left of unknown date.
The street elevation displays features typical of around 1800, arranged in a somewhat random manner, indicating an early origin for the house. The central door is flanked by two early 19th-century sash windows, each with six panes over six, and there is an early C19 porch supported by slender cast iron columns. On the upper floor, there are five additional windows with six over six sashes, arranged in a pattern of two, one, and two, with only the right-hand pair positioned directly above the features below. The roof is steeply pitched and includes end stacks, along with one stack located in the cross-passage position to the right of the doorway. The rear elevation was not observed.
During a recent survey, only the ground floor was examined, which has been modernized into a bar area, resulting in the loss of planning and any historic features. The only remaining evidence of the possible original cross-passage is the position of the central chimney.
