Description

Penrhos Farmhouse is a late 17th-century building located in Monmouthshire, constructed from local rubble that is now completely rendered, with a Welsh slate roof. This tall structure has two storeys and an attic, featuring overhanging eaves and later red brick chimney stacks at both ends. The main facade includes three broadly spaced windows, which are now cross-framed lattice casements; these were originally sash windows at the time of listing in 1991. The right side displays exposed quoins, and there are three gabled dormers with two-light lattice casements, down from two at the time of listing. An additional window is located to the left of the central entrance on the ground floor. The cemented surrounds of these openings, with some red brick jambs, suggest that the sizes of the openings have changed, possibly from original cross-frame windows, but these details are now obscured by the render. The central entrance features a new gabled hood and a replacement door, with a square date plaque above, believed to be from 1718, displaying weathered initials (? IGE). There is an attached rubble boundary wall to the right.

The rear elevation was not inspected during the resurvey in July 2000, but the description from the time of listing in 1991 notes that it is roughcast with one gabled dormer and two multipane casement windows at the center, which light the stairs. A lower two-storey cross range was added to the left, made of rubble with two windows on the southwest side and a tall chimney stack on the gable end, which originally had a steeper structure beyond. There is also a later whitewashed rubble lean-to on the right with a slate roof. This elevation is likely to have been fully refurbished with replacement features. The south gable has a small window on each floor, with none in the attic.

The interior underwent extensive alterations in the late 19th century and was further upgraded during the refurbishment of the 1990s. It was not available for inspection at the time of the resurvey.
