Description

Maindee Pools is a swimming pool facility featuring a narrow frontage and a hall with an attached house on one side, along with a baths block that extends long and wide to the rear. The exterior is cement rendered, with a flat roof over the frontage. The entrance block is three stories high, with three windows (which have been replaced) separated by vertical bands. The top storey has shallow rectangular windows, while the taller rectangular windows are located below. On the ground floor, there is a shallow canopy over three doorways that have swing doors. To the right, there is a two-storey house wing featuring four-light windows set within a curved frontage on the left, and a slightly projecting section with a three-window range of single light windows, all of which are metal-framed five-pane casements. The front courtyard is bordered by a wall with Art Deco railings and three sets of double gates. All windows in the baths wing have been replaced.

Inside, the long hall features a terrazzo floor arranged in panels. Art Deco elements include hanging bowl lights and lamps on metal stands that depict female figures holding orbs. The side walls are adorned with paired half-round columns that extend from the plinth to the ceiling, incorporating Art Deco style light fittings. The walls also display boards recording swimming achievements and an inset mosaic wall plaque. A kiosk has been added later. An imperial-type staircase leads to the upper floor and balconies. The pool area boasts a striking roof made up of seven tapering concrete arches that rise from the side balconies, with seating arranged in four descending concrete tiers below. The walls have a roughcast and painted finish. The main balconies at each end feature curved metal railings with a wooden top rail and a parquet floor. Additionally, there is a small learners' pool adjoining the main pool.
