Description
The Farmhouse and The Dairy at Upper Maerdy is a 19th-century structure built of roughcast rubble stone, topped with a slate roof and featuring brick end stacks. The farmhouse stands three storeys tall with three bays that are regular but not equally spaced; there is one bay to the left and two to the right of an off-centre door. The windows are three-light casements with cambered heads on the lower storeys, while the upper windows are located under the eaves. Most of these upper windows retain their original catches and some have original leading, all set on stone sills. A broad ledged door is positioned left of centre within a gabled timber porch. On the eastern end, there is a small loft window above the roof of the wing.
To the left, there is a lower L-plan wing. A short section to the left of the house features a door to 'The Dairy' within a 20th-century glazed porch. The long return of this wing has a window with stone voussoirs below and a loft light under the eaves, which retains shuttered unglazed windows with a diagonal wooden mullion. The rubble stone rear of the farmhouse presents a near-symmetrical front with two lofted sections, each flanking a broad cambered-headed ground floor entry. The ground floor openings have stone voussoirs, with loft lights under the eaves. There are two loft windows on each side; the left side features windows with 20th-century glazing, while the right side has boarded windows. The left side also includes a ground floor outer door and two doors beneath the loft windows, two of which are partially infilled with 20th-century windows, and the third has a 20th-century door. The right side has wider spacing, with a ground floor boarded window beneath the second loft opening and an outer door. Both ends of the building have external stone stairs leading to the loft doors. The rear of the short link has a pair of small-paned casements on the ground floor, with a 20th-century window above.
At the rear of the main house, there are two small centre stair-lights and one ground floor triple casement to the right, all featuring red brick heads. There is a lean-to addition to the left, and part of the rear roof is covered with asbestos sheet.
