Description
This is a well-preserved 17th-century timber-framed barn located at Fishpool Farm. It features post-and-truss construction built on a rubble plinth, with weather-board cladding on the walls and a regularly-coursed blue slate roof. The barn has a rectangular six-bay layout oriented southwest to northeast, with opposing wagon entrances located in the fourth bay from the southwest end. The southeast entrance is highlighted by a prominent one-bay gabled porch, which includes full-height doors made of softwood vertical boarding, along with a weatherboarded gable and side walls. Adjacent to the porch is a rubble-built lean-to topped with a corrugated sheet roof.
On the northwest side, the weatherboarding is recent. The wagon doorway is flush with the walls but slightly taller, with the roof sweeping up over it and featuring batten-and-board doors, one of which is divided horizontally into equal halves, resembling a stable door. To the right of the doorway, the two bays at the west end have plain doorways on either side and a pair of square windows positioned between them.
Except for the porch on the southeast side, the wall framing consists of two tiers of square panels, created by a main rail between the wall posts and two sets of studs for each bay. The roof trusses are constructed with raked struts to the principals and high-set collars, all secured with pegs, supporting two tiers of trenched purlins. Between the second and third bays from the west end, there is a timber-framed partition featuring carpenter's marks and open panels. A part of a formerly similar partition can be seen between the first and second bays, with the wall posts at these locations displaying long chunky jowls.
